In India Blackgram is grown all over the country. It is cultivated over an area of 24 lakh hectares with a production of about 7.7 lakh tons.

Urd requires a hot and humid growing season. It can be grown succesfully from sea level up to an elevation of 1800 meters. Heavy rain during the flowering stage is harmful and adversely affect the production.

Urd does well on heavier soils such as black cotton soil which retains moisture better. However, it can be grown on all types of soils ranging from sandy loam to heavy clay, except the alkaline and saline soils.
