In India it is cultivated on about 1.4 lakh hectares with a total production of about 50,000 tons of fibre. It is grown mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Orissa. Uttar Pradesh has the largest area under Sann-Hemp cultivation.

Climatic Requirements

Sann-Hemp grows best in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. It requires a minimum of 40 centimeter of well distributed rainfall during the growing season for its successful cultivation for the fibre purpose.

Season

In northern India, it is grown in the Kharif season, while in southern India where the winter is not so pronounced it is raised in the Rabi season.

Soil
|
|
Well drained loamy soils are best for Sann-Hemp cultivation. If there is proper management for drainage it can also be grown on heavy soils. Acidic soils are not suitable for this crop.

Variety

Several varieties are released for cultivation, which differ in the quantity and quality of fibre which they yield, their period of maturity, branching habit etc. Selection of varieties depends mainly on the following factors:
