Sorghum

Climatic Requirements | Season | Soil |Variety

Among the sorghum growing countries India ranks first in acreage but second in production. In India it is grown over an area of 16 million hectare with total production of about 11.6 million tons. However the average yield of sorghum in India is only 717 kg per hectare.

  Climatic Requirements

Sorghum requires warm conditions but it can be grown under a wide range of conditions. It is grown from sea level to as high as 1500 meters. It can tolerate high temperature throughout its life cycle better than any other crop. It can be grown in areas having an average annual rainfall between 60-100 cm. The minimum temperature for the germination of the sorghum seed is 7-10 degree centigrade. It needs about 26-30 degree centigrade temperature for the optimal growth.

  Season

Sorghum is a Rabi (winter) season crop in western and southern India. And in northern India it is grown as Kharif crop.

  Soil

Soils with clay loam or loam texture, having good water retention capacity are favourable for sorghum cultivation. It does well in pH range of 6.0-8.5 as it tolerates considerable salinity and alkalinity.

  Variety

Most of the local tall varieties of jowar grown in various states are of long duration (5-7 months) with poor yielding potential. Improved hybrid and other varieties had yielded about 80-100 percent more than local tall varieties. Its varieties vary in their sensitivity to both temperature and photoperiod. Selection of varieties depends mainly on the following factors:
  • Method Of Sowing
  • Crop Rotation
  • Pest and Disease
  • Irrigration Facilities
  • Climatic Conditions
