Sugarbeet

Climatic Requirements | Soil |Variety

Sugarbeet is one of the most efficient converter of solar energy into stored energy. It produces about 35-50 tons of roots per hectare with sugar content of 15-16% and 10-12% sugar recovery on an average. The crop matures in April/May when the cane crushing season is nearly over. Thus supply of sugarbeet can extend the working season of mills by nearly two months and reduce the cost of sugar production.

  Climatic Requirements

Sugarbeet is the crop of temperate and cold climate. It is highly versatile and can be raised successfully in any region with temperature ranging from 12 to 45 degree centigrade during the crop season (October to May). It can be grown profitably in almost all parts of the country where such climate exists.

  Soil

Sugarbeet can be grown in well drained sandy loam to clay loam soils. Heavy clay soils should be avoided. A well drained fertile subsoil is most preferable. Sugarbeet thrives very well in saline-alkaline soils with pH value as high as 9.5. Genetic ability of a variety, in respect of sugar production is one of the most important factor for the success of beet sugar industry. Therefore, varieties suitable for the factory, and growers should be carefully selected every year.

Seeds improved varieties of sugarbeet were obtained from all over the world. Selection of varieties depends mainly on the following factors:
  • Method Of Sowing
