Leafy vegetable, abundantly contains minerals like calcium, iron and vitamin A, B Complex and C. It is mainly grown for its soft leaves, its soft stems are also used. Its cultivation is mainly done in winter only.

 

  Soil

 

Spinach can be grown in all types of fertile land with proper drainage. Sandy soil is also suitable for the growing of spinach with pH around 7.

  Sowing

 
In plain area, sowing can be done three times in a year. First in spring, second after monsoon and third in September- mid November. Sowing can be done by "Chitakawan Method" in ready farms. But sowing in rows is preferred because this way weeding and cutting can be done easily.

  Manures

 
Nitrogen is very important element for leafy vegetables. 15-20 tons of decomposed fertilizers per hectare should be applied over the land, 12-15 days before sowing. 20 kg Nitrogen, 25 kg Phosphorus and 50 kg Potash per hectare should be applied.

  Protection

 
The main disease of crop is Damping Off and Sarkospora. For prevention from Damping Off, seeds should be cured with 2.5 gm of Capton or Thiram per kg seed. While prevention from Sarkospora, in which leaves develop brown spots, can be done by spraying Blaintabs medicine at the rate of 2 gm per 1 liter water.

  Variety

 
In India, efficient varieties of spinach are grown. Those varieties which are enriched in minerals and which regrow quickly are considered to be the best.
